From the Editor's Keyboard...

New Year is fast approaching. Sai centers and Sai devotees across the world are requested to share with others, the activities planned for the New Year’s Eve and New Years Day, through Sai Vichaar. Please use article submission form for submitting your information for publication in Sai Vichaar.

Sai Baba’s lifestyle in Shirdi was one of intriguing to the onlooker. Sometimes, He was engaged in sweet conversation, sometimes appeared engrossed in Himself. He always uttered, "Allah Malik" (God is great), while some of His other remarks were cryptic that did not make sense at once. At times, Baba for no unseeingly reason used to get angry and shower one with abuses! An encounter with Meher Baba, another Perfect Master of our times was one such occasion whence Baba refused to meet Him at first only to accost him as "Parvadigar" (The Protector) later. In Sai literature some explanations are found for Baba’s anger . However, His mysterious anger seemed at times inexplicable for several.

Humbly yours,

The Editor

Feature of the week: Baba's Mission

The term "Mission" is derived from the Latin "Mitto" meaning "to send". So, a missionary is the one who is sent with a message or direction. As used in the Christian literature, a mission was the most valuable characteristic of the lives of such great Prophets as Moses, Jesus, and others. Jesus’ mission was by His own death to absolve mankind from hereditary or original sin, that is, the sin derived by being the descendents of the first sinners, Adam and Eve. His death was considered as a sacrifice on behalf of entire humanity. Others’ mission, for example, Moses’ was to lead the Jews from captivity in Egypt on towards the Promised Land. The idea of a missionary is practically that of an agent. In the case of Sai Baba, he declared, "God has agents everywhere, they have great powers". Baba added, "I also have great powers", implying thereby that he was also an agent of God. He also expressly told D.S. Rasane, "I can do nothing except when God orders". He did not give a kupni to G.G. Narke saying, "The Fakir (God) has not permitted me to give you a kupni", i.e., the rope of a sanyasi or begging fakir, as G.G. Narke was to be a family man, an earning Grihastha, according to God’s plan and not a beggar. As an agent, he said that he had vast powers. The powers and the mission have a close relation. The mission has to be worked through the powers given and the powers are given only for carrying out the mission. Baba had by concentration on God practically every siddhi (Great Power) that one can think of. Srimad Bhagavadgeetha says, "What power is there that can not be got by concentration on God with conquest or control of mind and senses and breath?" Baba’s vast powers were always utilized for the benefit of mankind, promoting individual benefits that were obvious, seen, and well understood, and general benefits which were not so equally obvious or well seen and understood. We have to consider the mission of Baba based on the possession of His powers and notice what general benefits were conferred on the country or mankind, though these are not yet obvious to most people.

Contributed Article: Non Destructive Talking

A Spiritual Journey and Retreat - By S.V. Swamy, Hyderabad, India
When a large number of Sai Devotees were gathering in Chicago, during 23-25, November to celebrate His glory, He, the kind Guru that He is, gave me, the humble devotee in His Durbar, another job during the same period. From 20th November to 7th December, I was in Bombay (Oh, Mumbai, not only to be politically correct but also to remember with gratitude the Goddess Mumba Devi, after whom the city is named), attending a Refresher Course and Examinations for ASNT (American Society for Non-Destructive Testing) Level III in Basic, Ultrasonic Testing and Radiographic Testing. Sai also gave me another definition for NDT: Non-Destructive Thinking, which automatically leads to Non-Destructive Talking! Another kind perception given by Him: Most of the NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) methods are used both in Industry to test materials and in Medical Field to test humans. For example, Ultrasound and X-ray are regularly used in medical diagnosis. X-rays and Gamma Rays from Radio Isotopes are regularly used in treatment of tumors. Thus in the medical field, NDT also stands for Non-Destructive Treatment! And like scientists and engineers like myself use these non-invasive, non-destructive tests to study materials and like the doctors who use them to study humans, Sri Sai is the Master of NDT! He knows the innermost secrets of all of us, even what we ourselves are probably not aware! He also knows how to set us on the right path, i.e., He administers Non-Destructive Therapy to give us the physical and spiritual progress which we pray for! Of Course, if we ask for it or when the right time comes, He uses the powerful radiation of His Love to destroy the Cancer of our selfishness too! Even while preparing for the examinations, generally considered grueling by much younger people, this writer, by His Grace, though past 52 years, did not find the going tough at all. In fact, the course and the exams were made very interesting and easy by His grace and I regularly studied His Satcharitra to gain the necessary strength. He was kind enough to give me some fairly deep, very personal spiritual experiences, which certainly were treasured much more than the NDT courses! Whenever, I felt a little tension or anxiety during the examinations, I reminded myself and Him that the examination is not for me but for Him! That gave a lot of relief! The results of course are in His Hand and will come in a month or two, but He has given enough insight to accept the results whatever they may be! I again bow in gratitude to this Sat Guru, who is always at our call, and asks nothing in return, except the Two Paise!

Experiences of Devotees

Sathyabhama Sharma, Potomac, Maryland, USA
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Dwarkamayi, I have been debating in my mind this morning if I should reveal this beautiful experience or not. Than my mind said that if one does not have Ego then writing down ones experience becomes the glory of ones SadGuru. Overwhelmed as I am, I have no words to describe that person like me can be dear to Baba. My husband and I were not feeling well to the extent that we had to take one weeks leave. It was a bad case of flu. I attended my office yesterday. As I reached home, I felt severe pain in my right ear. As I could not sleep and did not want to disturb my husband, I went downstairs in the family room. But the pain was getting more and more. I did not want my husband to take me to emergency as he is also not feeling too good and I myself could not drive anyway. My husband suggested me to go take Baba's Udi from Poojaroom. I invoked Baba's help and keeping Udi at His Feet, I took it with water and little of it I rubbed on my infected ear. I came upstairs, within few minutes I was sound asleep and around 1.45 AM, I got up from sleep and felt my ear. I was amazed that there was no trace of pain. Before this I was crying with pain but now I turned on the light and putting my head on Baba's Feet in the picture in our bedroom, cried tears of joy remembering His merciful nature. Baba knew that with this ear infection and pain, his daughter would not be able to complete the Sai SatCharitra Parayana. Dear Brothers and Sisters, to tell you the truth that I could not sleep after 145 AM till this morning. I kept on repeating his name. I have come to the conclusion that when one have full Faith in ones Guru, He makes it sure that all the spiritual observations are taken care of nicely. This becomes His dear responsibility. Reading of Sai SatCharitra made me earn His Kripa. To my utter surprise, even during this illness, Baba made me sit in poojaroom quiet calmly and without any aches or pains and let me read assigned 7 chapters of Sai SatCharitra regularly. My daughter teases me that I stay happy with Baba and when I come upstairs to them I get sick. It is all His mercy. Please always beg for His name, everything comes to you with it as blessings. Where there is Baba's Name and Leelas Shravanam and Mananam, there is no place for sickness. Please keep on remembering His name in your heart always. If you are observing any spiritual event at home, He will make sure that it is performed smoothly. I have experienced this many times.

Devotees say...

Sharma
It would be wonderful to hear devotees' input on the Sai Utsav 2000, a festival which I thought was absolutely wonderful and uplifting. Hopefully, the planners are already at work for Sai Utsav 2001! Congratulations to the Chicago people who put this together! Sainath Maharaj ki jai!

Achuta Ramaiah

Sai Sai Sai
We pray for you
Every morning, evening, and night
But you listen
But you listen only
But action not forth coming
Why why Baba ??

Sai said wait in my dream !!
Two small Kids
Knocked at my door
With Sai's photograph
They were Mute
Could not speak
I tried giving them money
They got offended !!
They pointed to Sai !!
Said " Your job will be done soon "

I was speechless !
Was it Baba?
I ran down the steps
But they just vanished !!

I went to the local
Sai temple and saluted him !!
With tears running my cheeks
Baba you have blessed me !!!

Sai Activities

Shirdi Sai Mandir, Bangalore, India
Reported by Praveen (gramapraveen@hotmail.com) Baba revealed to Geethamma 7 years ago, in a rock, at Kumaraswamy Layout, in Bangalore. Ever since, Baba talks to his devotees through' his divine powers he has bestowed on Geethamma. Geethamma's guru is Sri Raghavendra Swamy of Mantralyam. All the same, Baba works through her. Needless to say, Geethamma has the ability to see our past and future and to talk to Shirdi Baba. She sees people every Thursday and advises what Baba tells her. She has been doing this on a personal basis at no charge, since she is doing Baba's bidding. I have had numerous experiences. When she talks, I cannot make out the difference between her and Shirdi Baba. I urge any people traveling to Bangalore to try to see her. She sees people on Thursdays after Baba's pooja at home. The meeting is bound to change your lives.

Geethamma is building a Swamboo Shirdi Sai temple at Kumaraswamuy layout in Bangalore. A Swamboo temple is where Baba has revealed himself directly. I am requesting all Sai Bhakthas to kindly contribute to this cause. The construction work has slowly started. Baba ordered that an old age home should be built, at the same location. The old age home is also coming up. With Geethamma's permission, I have undertaken to post this request, so all Sai Bhakthas can read and make contributions as Shirdi Sai wills them to.

For further information about this project, and Geethamma herself, please feel free to contact me at 518-782-7767 or by email at geethasreenivasan2000@yahoo.com.

Hindu Mandir, Minnesota, USA
(Reported by Sudhakar, MN, USA)

Dear Sai devotees, there is a plan to construct a Hindu temple in Minnesota (Minneapolis). Efforts are being made to raise funds for this purpose. If you feel it will be convenient for you to donate some money (ANY small or big amount), it will be of great help. In my opinion, helping build a temple is a rare and wonderful opportunity to serve god and mankind. Please do not forget that our sadguru Sai himself used to spend money collected out of the dakshina for repairs of temples in Shirdi. Please go through the following website which gives a complete description about the plan, budget, contact information and some interesting FAQs : http://209.98.181.61/hindumandir

Quotation of the Week

"Sai Baba is one of our incarnate divinities. He was not a writer or a speaker. He was beyond words and thoughts. He was the "Truth" as it is and Love as it manifests, such silent dynamic souls do not disapper with the body. Sai cosmic force still acts and saves thousands" - Justice M.B. Rege, Sai Devotee

Question of the Week

What are the similarities between Sainath of Shirdi and Jesus of Nazareth?

Priya Srinivasan, Omaha, USA
In order to establish peace and harmony in this world, both Baba and Jesus descended to earth. The presence of Jesus led to the birth of Christianity whereas Baba did not create a religion. Both of them worked hard during their lifetime to lead people towards the right path. Even though both were mocked at, ultimately they succeeded because today, Baba in Shirdi is still drawing devotees to him like a magnet and Jesus is worshipped in every church in this world. Both performed various miracles. Even after attaining samadhi, Baba assured that even his bones would work hard for the welfare of his devotees. Similarly Jesus’ blood cured many after his crucifixion. Both of them were never after worldly pleasures and led a very simple life. Even though both of them lived in different parts of the world, their fame spread far and wide. Both of them are descendants of the same god. SaiRam.

Ravin Gnanasambandam, Ithaca, NY
Compassion. Baba is the most merciful fakir, just like Jesus. He heals. His love and compassion spread beyond one religion. Jesus lived physically during a period of chaos and religious cacophony that was in a way similar to Sainath’s tenure on earth. Baba is one Sadguru that stood beyond the divisions of religion or caste during times of less than tolerance. Sadgurus who appeared on earth had to work more often within the confines of a religion or a certain faith. By refusing to fit into any description, Baba broke the subtle yet strong boundaries that man had made over the time. The origins may be mysterious, but the mission is clear. Even as the other Perfect Masters had to succumb to such limits, Baba is the only perfect master who has not been confined to a particular religion. The effect of this is the acceptance of Baba as Guru and God by people of all faiths. One of the ways Baba’s children could reciprocate His love is to have faith in Baba and see Him in the light of humanity, compassion, love, and spirituality that are beyond the confines of any religion. This Interfaith approach to Baba’s devotion is an important other dimension that a follower need to acknowledge and comprehend. Bow to Sri Sai Peace be to all.
