Mombassa to Muscat...I cannot fully express my happiness in joining these devotees in singing the glory of Sainath. True to His words, the lap is growing and accommodating.

Universal are His love, grace, and generosity. Thanks to Mrs. Harsha Dave of Kenya and Mr. Kishore Asthana of Oman for sharing their love and glory with us all.

We are just one week away from Guru Poornima. Several devotees have sent us mails encoring about the significance of Guru Poornima and the way it is celebrated.

Please visit other sections of this website for more information on the importance of this festival. It is also useful to follow the discussions by devotees on the other forums to learn more about Guru Poornima.

As we informed last week, we are very pleased to organize a write up activity on life and teachings of Sadguru Sainath of Shirdi.

This activity will involve contribution by interested devotees on topics related to Sadguru Sainath. This will be in the form of essays not exceeding one thousand words.

This essay writing activity will be under three different topics for different age groups as follows:

Category I --- age from 10 years to 17 years,
Category II --- ages from 18 years to 25 years,
Category III --- ages from 26 years and above.

All essays will be posted on the web site for a certain period of time. The essays considered the best by the readers would be rewarded appropriately.

We request readers to participate in the essay writing activity by contributing essays, as well as, by expressing their opinions on them.

This activity is planned with the sole intention of promoting Sai philosophy and providing yet another platform for singing His glory.

Please look forward to our next issue for the details including the three topics, deadlines for submission, duration of the essays on the web site and final announcement of the rewards.

We again take this opportunity to salute beloved devotees who showed utmost patience and stood up to the test of faith during the past incidents concerning our email distribution. Thanks for your continued support.

Humbly yours,

The Editor

Feature of the week:
GURU

Gurupoornima approaching in a week, it is appropriate to know the importance of Guru in simple terms.

Guru or teacher is an important aspect of learning and it is imperative that, what one learns from Guru can not be obtained by reading even several books.

This is something every one experiences practically in every day life, learning in school and outside.

If this is the case with all the material knowledge revealed by the efforts of mankind, it is also imperative that pursuit of knowledge beyond the realms of human life does require a Guru or teacher of manifold capabilities.

An ancient Hindu scripture defines the term Guru as follows: "The word "GU" signifies darkness, and " RU" signifies one who removes it.

Due to his ability to remove the darkness of ignorance, a transcendentalist is addressed as a Guru." In spiritual pursuit, casting votes or an assembly can not appoint a Guru.

The followers realize him due to his inherent spiritual qualities and a thorough training in spiritual knowledge and etiquette.

Recognition of such a person from others is accomplished by appreciating his ability to remove the darkness of ignorance of a surrendered soul.

Such a spiritual master is considered a medium to God. Thus, choice of a Guru differs from other material choices one makes. If the yearning is intense and the pursuit honest, Guru reveals Himself to the seeker.

GURU POORNIMA
Several devotees have sent us mails inquiring about the significance of Guru Poornima and the way it is celebrated.

The Poornima (Full Moon) Day in the month of Ashadha (July-August) is known as Guru Poornima.

This is a very sacred day on which special worship is performed to the Acharyas (Gurus), who, through their Infinite Compassion and Supreme Grace, have imparted the Knowledge of the Absolute (Brahma Vidya) through a long lineage of Acharyas (Guru Parampara) to all the Seekers of the Self.

The celebration of Guru Poornima began in Shirdi around 1908. One day Shri Baba told his disciple Shri Dada Kelkar, "Do you know this day is the day to approach Gurus? Bring your worship articles".

Then Shri Kelkar and his friends looked up the calendar and found that the day was Guru Poornima day.

They started worshipping Shri Sai Baba as their Guru, and that practice has continued till today not only in Shirdi but all over the world where prayers are offered to Shri Sai.

Devotees celebrate Guru Poornima by performing Guru Pooja (offering prayers to the Guru) to our Lord Shri Sai Baba.

Each Sai Devotee can either perform the Sai Guru Pooja (prayer) at home or attend a Sai Guru Pooja or sponsor a Sai Guru Pooja being performed at a Sai temple by offering donation or other articles used in Pooja (Pooja samagri).

In Sai mandirs, satsangs and at homes, Guru Poornima day is celebrated by offering all four arthis to Sadguru Sainath, doing Sai Namasmarana, performing Sai Abhishek and involving in Bhajans and Kirtans.

This may also be an auspicious occasion to begin performing regular acts of charity, and express our love and respect to Sainath by indulging in activities dear to Him.

For more information on Guru Poornima, please visit the Guru Poornima page and elsewhere on this website.

Children Of God
(A contribution by Mrs. Harsha Ashok Dave, Kenya; written on the 7th of March 1986 , Tudor, Mombasa)

We are all children of GOD
Brought into one abode
Through the same road
To fulfil the workload!

Whether we read the Bible,
The Geeta, or The Quran,
Whether we are white,
Black or brown

We are all built of flesh, bones
And RED-colored blood!
Our needs are the same -
Air, water, shelter, bread and bed

When our end is near
And when we are dear
GOD takes us back to
HIS heavenly abode!

RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD Part II
(Contributed by Mr. Somalingam, Christchurch, Newzealand)

CHRISTIANITY
Jesus of Nazareth was born about 2,000 years ago in a place called Bethlehem, which is a part of present day Israel.

The Teachings of Jesus
Jesus grew up a Jew and followed the Jewish faith, a thriving religion of those times Himself. Jesus believed that all men and women should love each other and God with all their hearts.

A New Commandment
Jesus said the whole of Jewish Law could be summed up very simply: "You shall love the lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and your neighbor as yourself."

The Trinity
Most Christians believe in God as three parts, a Trinity: God the father, Jesus Christ the Son and the HOLY SPIRIT. These are separate sides of the one God.

The Christian Scriptures
The Christian scriptures are called the Bible. They include the Old Testament, which is some of the old Jewish scriptures, and the New Testament includes four accounts of the life of Jesus -the gospels.

There is also a book about the early work of preaching called the Acts of the Apostles. Some of the letters written by the apostles are included too, as well as a book called the Revelation, a message from God received in a vision and written down by a man called John.

The books were gathered together to make the Bible, as Christians today know it, by about AD 400.

Living Simply (an excellent example to follow in this world)
The Amish, Mennonites and Hutterites are all groups of Christian sects that developed in the European Reformation.

They insist on a simple life-style and live together in a community of sharing with one another.

They are still found all over the world, but they are best known in United States and Canada, where their 'horse-and-buggy' lifestyle contrasts with the frantic race for wealth in the rest of society.

They are recognized as excellent farmers, and they are generous in giving any extra money they have to help the needy.
